2003 Comic Con Coverage

Friday, September 05, 2003

Juliet Mills has lent her voice to a variety of audiobooks over the years... Amazon.com has many available for those who can't get enough of this wonderful voice.

Through Amazon.com you can also get your copy of Juliet Mills book Mind, Body & Soul.

She told the gathered fans at Dragon*Con that this began as a cookbook, because she loves cooking, but evolved into much more as she saw an opportunity to share with others her thinking about food and life.

Tony Amendola

Tony Amendola has done a great deal more work than the average viewer seems to realize. Having worked opposite Antonio Banderas in The Mask of Zorro he later was cast in Antonion Bandera's directorial debut Crazy in Alabama. But that is no great surprise, for anyone who has taken a moment to talk with Amendola or attended one of his panels at Dragon*Con 2003 knows this man is a class act! A talented man who gives every reason to believe he is a joy to work with, there is no questioning hollywood's top stars, like Banderas, would want to work with him time and again.

With the help of Amazon.com we'd like to point you to projects featuring Tony Amendola, known to many as Bra'Tac of Stargate SG-1.

Monday's featured guest (the final one we will feature for Dragon*Con 2003 since the event has come and gone) Beastmaster (DVD)V:The Final Battle (DVD)

Marc Singer

Marc Singer, star of Beastmaster Movies (and gueststar on the recent Beastmaster Series) and of V was at Dragon*Con and was a total delight to meet! He did not just sit behind his table waiting for those already familiar with his career to find him, he beckoned people over, shook their hands, talked witht hem, and introduced us to him, his career -- and the fine work he has done.

Marc Singer seemed to come to Dragon*Con to promote Marc Singer, to thank those who were already fans, and make new fans... and I believe he accomlished that goal with style and grace! Here's hoping we see Marc Singer at many more conventions in the coming years.

Tony Amendola & Chris Judge

What a WONDERFUL Stargate Panel.

These two men clearly get along well, and have fun working together -- in this case working the crowd into fits of laughter while they are at it.

When asked about Pranks on the set Tony Amendola, just after Chris had taken a sip of water, declared he'd never pulled a prank on set. Chris' mouthful of water went spraying out towards the gathered fans, implying doubt and disbelief if nothing else. Turns out that Tony Amendola is plenty willing to encourage Chris to pull whatever pranks come to his mind, and a few very entertaining examples quickly followed.

Tomorrow, Monday, is another Chris and Tony panel... which I am hopeful will be half as much fun as the one today (Sunday.)

I do have to wonder if tomorrow's panel will include lots of turned on cell phones with hopes they will get a call that Christopher Judge will insist on answering... as he answered three calls to fans during today's panel.

Saturday's panelists included, from left to right, Tony Amendola (Bra'tac of Stargate fame was here with Stephen Furst discussing DragonStorm which will air on the SciFi channel in early 2004, and also stars John Rhys-Davies who was unable to attend the convention) Vaughn Armstrong (Admiral Forrest from Enterprise) JG Hertzler (Martok from Deep Space9, who has also written 2 Trek novels) and Stephen Furst (Vir from Babylon 5.)

With guests like these you know why Dragon*Con says they get some of the best science fiction guests of any convention.

These four entertained and delighted the fans, as well as interacting with them.

Furst and Amendola told stories about the filming of DragonStorm in Bulgaria, the cold weather and trying to shoot a film in that cold weather in just 18 days, all on steadicam. While Armstrong and Hertzler talked with the fans about trek, what made it great in the past, and what would help to make it great in the future.

Featured Guest (again featured by PopArtsPlace.com if nothing else, because we don't want you to miss them)

Chase Masterson

Chase Masterson, best known as Leeta the D'abo girl on Deep Space 9, is a wonderful down to earth very real person and a joy to meet.

Willing to speak publicly for what may well have been the first time about her current legal battle she let the gathering understand just what a victim goes through, and brought everyone into her situation.

Tomorrow, Monday, she'll be a guest on the Trek Trak, and we believe that is a panel that will be well worth anyone, and everyone's time.

Looking for a way to support chase? You can start by picking up a copy of her CD Thrill of the Chase .

Today, Saturday, will include another hour with George Takei, and based on a wonderful hour spent listening to him yesterday I highly encourage folks to make the effort to get to this hour.

An impassioned, self proclaimed rambler, George Takei manages to tie his thoughts together and bring things full circle in the most wonderful ways, making the folks in the room very happy he went off on that rambleand let us know that he learned to fence, for an episode of Star Trek, from the man who choreographed Errol Flynn's fight scenes in Robin Hood. (And who fenced opposite him when you only saw the other character's back.)

As you can see George has a wonderful laugh -- and loves giving the audience plenty of reason to laugh with him.

Avanti (DVD)Today's Featured Guest (featured by PopArtsPlace.com that is... cuz we wanna make sure you know they're here!)

Juliet Mills

Emmy award-winning Juliet Mills portrays Tabitha Lenox, the seemingly thoughtful and sweet next-door neighbor who is really a 300 year-old witch intent on wreaking havoc on the residents of Harmony.

A member of the famous British family that includes her father actor Sir John Mills, her mother, playwright Lady Mary Mills and sister, actress Hayley Mills, Juliet has performed on stage on both Broadway and in the West End of London. She received an Emmy as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Special for the mini-series "QB VII," two Golden Globe nominations; one for her infamous portrayal as Phoebe Figalilly in the television series "Nanny and the Professor" and one for her leading role opposite Jack Lemmon in Billy Wilder's "Avanti!" Mills also received a Tony nomination for her role as Pamela Harrington in "Five Finger Exercise."

Mills has a multitude of theatre credits including the title role in "Lady Windermere's Fan," The Royal Shakespeare Company's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and "She Stoops to Conquer." She has performed many times alongside her husband, actor Maxwell Caulfield, in stage productions such as "The Elephant Man," "Dial M for Murder," and George Orwell's "1984," as well as numerous Equity Waiver productions in Los Angeles.

In addition to "Avanti!" Mills' other film credits include "The Other Sister," "Twice Around the Daffodils," "The Rare Breed" and numerous British films.

Juliet is scheduled to have a panel Sunday at 2:30 pm, and will be on the Walk of Fame in the dealer's room throughout the convention.

Pictured at the top of this entry is the DVD cover for
Avanti
which Juliet answered questions about during her panel on Sunday. it is a Billy Wilder film starring Jack Lemmon that she gained 35! pounds for and shot in Italy.

We realized during the panel that Juliet Mills has done a great deal more work than most realize, so we've decided to highlight a few projects here:

QB VII, The Other Sister, and Judith Krantz's Till We Meet Again

Welcome to Dragon*Con!

Okay, lesson learned, last year we took a red eye, arrived at 1 am and started attending panels at 10 am. That was hard.

This year we got up at 4 am, flew in, and immediately started attending the convention -- possibly harder! We've just now (9:30 pm give or take) made it back to our hotel and there are panels/concerts at 10:30 and midnight that I'd like to make it to (Julie Caitlin Brown & Bill Mummy) that I'm doubting we'll make it to... but we wish them loads of luck, broken legs I suppose is how that should read, and fun! (For them and the gathered fans.)

George Takei gave a fabulous hour to the fans today! (Take a moment to visit the official George Takei Website)

That man can make you laugh (Star Trek Fans are like tribbles -- they multiply! And our box office proceeds benefitted, so thanks!) and can get down to serious matters (being a 4 year old who, along with the rest of his family, was taken from their life in LA to an internment camp in Arkansas) without bringing the mood so far down it can't be recovered. Instead he simply shared that America is a great and strong nation, one that can acknowledge it has grown and improved with age -- and while the internment camps were a negative in the history of America, it does not diminish America, but rather should be remembered as a part of our growth, a part of its evolution to an even greater nation. Takei mentioned that a great deal of his autobiography is about life in the internment camps, and based on today's panel I would say that sounds like a must read.

Takei also mentioned he is very active with the Japanese-American museum which has some fabulous exhibits touring the US to help educate people on the Japanese - American experience. The room echoed with the warning, those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it, and in post 9-11 America that is a warning worth hearing.

J.G. Hertzler was another panel that was worth the effort to get to. A man who has a great deal of knowledge about trek, but also sees the possibilities, and wants shows like Enterprise to really rise to the hopes and dreams of the fans. A great mind, and an apparent gift for doing research he spoke of features on the Star Trek 4 and 6 DVDs that he helped bring to life, and really showed that a lot of love and thought went into them. A guy who has a lot of fun, he also has an understanding of the Klingons, a belief that they are fun strong characters, and speaks with such passion about them that I expect to hear very soon that his Star Trek books featuring Martok has become a best sellers! (Check out his books, Left Hand of Destiny, Book 1 and Left Hand of Destiny, Book 2 at Amazon.com)

Bill Mumy, Angela Cartwright and Noah Hathaway spoke about being child stars, and continuing to work in hollywood. A great love of make-believe, and living what others dream of brought them to the screen in the first place, and they've got no real reason to leave it anytime soon! So here's hoping we continue to see them on the screen week in week out.
