DRAGON*CON WELCOMES STAR TREK’S
ETHAN PHILLIPS AND ARMIN SHIMERMAN

Ethan Phillips is known as Neelix, the quirky Talaxian chef and unofficial morale officer of the starship Voyager. Armin Shimerman played Quark, the Ferengi bar owner on the space station Deep Space Nine.

Ethan Phillips, a transplanted New Yorker now California resident, has lent his talent to a variety of theater, film and TV roles. With a career that has spanned over several decades, Phillips is also well known for his TV role as Pete Downey, the governor's press aide, in ABC

Phillips, author and playwright, has published The Star Trek Cookbook offering recipes of traditional Star Trek food like Trill soup, Hasperat and Heart of Targ prepared using Earth ingredients. In true Neelix fashion, Phillips adds anecdotes, recounting tales of Neelix’s experiences with the Voyager crew members. His short play, Penguin Blues, has been produced on stage over a hundred times in the United States and Canada.

On a totally different note, Phillips provided the narration for the "Jason" undersea probe exhibit at the EPCOT Center's The Living Seas attraction at Walt Disney World.

Armin Shimerman
’s Quark holds the distinction of being the only character appearing on all three of the newer Star Trek series Star Trek – The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. The Next Generation Deep Space Nine Voyager

After moving her family from New Jersey to Los Angeles and in an attempt to help her son meet new people, Shimerman’s mother enrolled him in a drama group. Her effort paid off when, upon graduation from the University of California, he was chosen as one of only eight apprentices out of 900 candidates at the prestigious Old Globe Theater in San Diego. Shimerman later moved to New York to continue his acting on Broadway.

Besides Quark, Shimerman has also appeared in recurring roles in two CBS series – Beauty & The Beast as Pascal and Brooklyn Bridge as Cousin Bernard; ABC’s series The Practice as Judge Moskin; and The WB Network’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the insidious principal Snyder. Currently he can be found teaching his unique Shakespearean acting approach to students throughout Los Angeles.

As an author, Shimerman has written the Star Trek: DS9 novel The 34th Rule about a major dispute between Bajor and the Ferengi Alliance seen from Quark's perspective. Shimerman also voices the audio book skillfully mimicking every character from the Deep Space Nine series. He went on the write The Merchant Prince, an historical sci-fi where the lead character is transported through time from 16th century England to the late 21st century by an inquisitive alien.
