What they say:

In Victorian England, an impassioned scientist creates an invention that can shoot him back and forth in time, all the way to the year 800,000 where he finds humanity divided into two different tribes.

What I say:

I'm glad I spent the time... but am not sure I'll be inclined to buy this one.

If you are looking for an exact retelling of the book, as with most books that become movies, you will not find that.  Things are omitted, and some things are changed which may leave you wondering "but I thought."  And if you were thinking about the book then you would probably be right.

The visuals are stunning and it is a beautiful sight to behold at times -- but there are also some very fast paced scenes that left me and others around me wishing they had a seatbelt just to make sure they weren't going to get tossed around in the fun.

Guy Pearce was a man on a mission -- a man in search of an answer, and he found one.  In a spoiler filled review I could say more, but I will suffice to say that he asked the question long before I would have, and I think his mission would have be strengthened by his having more cause to ask the question.
