If ever there was a movie I was glad I heard about before it totally left the theaters it's A Knight's Tale.
I was sick in late April and the first three weeks of May -- if you can
imagine,
I felt so
horrible I barely even turned on the TV! So there was a month long period
in which I might as well have been in the middle of the ocean... actually, I
watched more TV when I worked in the middle of the ocean than I did in May, but
that's a different story.
I never saw a preview for A Knight's Tale. Did not know it was a movie
title, and was utterly clueless what I was looking at when I saw the bright red
logo for it on the Sony site a few nights ago. But, thankfully, there was
a good website that said enough to peak my interest, and it had a link to local
showtimes!![]()
The only theater to still be showing it, in early August, was the discount cinema 8. Okay, I sacrificed Stadium Seating, convenience (the discount cinema is so far out of town I think it may be in another town) and a few other things, but for $1.50 it's really hard to complain -- especially when you are treated to such a fun experience.
There are only a few movies that I would say are truly best seen in the
theater. It's not because the actors are lifesize (or bigger) like in the
church scene where you feel as though you are peering in on two young lovers
from across the aisle, but rather it is more of the jousting scenes, where you
are looking over the heads of other live audience members, and cinematic
audience members down into the arena!
(Gladiator
is another example of creating this effect well.) I felt as though these
other moviegoers and I were in the arena! What fun! (And yes, I do
believe the couple in front of me was chanting Ulrich at one point!)
The movie doesn't take itself too seriously -- the opening credits are accompanied by "We Will Rock You" complete with the actors stomping and clapping to the song, and yet it immediately pulls you in to see these hundreds of extras having such total fun. You are instantly a part of the crowd, and you are ready to be entertained along with them.
I give every actor in the film credit -- never once did I see something that made my mind pull out of the movie. They were all in character and interacting with one another so wonderfully that I was constantly being pulled further in. (It is rare for me to come out of a theater quoting dialogue, and yet my friend and I did that for most of the ride home. Click here to see some of the quotes that the Internet Movie Database has posted.)
This is a movie I will pick up on DVD when it comes out later this month, as it is a truly fun ride that I look forward to going on again.
We encourage you to take a tour around the web and find out more about the tale of a knight named Ulrich... or was it William, Sir William Thatcher. (Want to Chat with Others about A Knight's Tale? Go Here.)
