BRITTANY MURPHY (Molly Gunn)

Q: When you first read the script for Uptown Girls, what made you interested in playing Molly Gunn?

MURPHY: There are always different things that make me respond to a project or a script, and this one in particular was very visceral. It was one of those magical, unexplainable things. I look at Uptown Girls very much like a fairy tale. Not only was it funny, it was the most personal thing I've ever been a part of. And I wanted to be a part of a movie that everyone could see and enjoy.

Q: How does Molly Gunn become involved with Ray (Dakota Fanning)?

MURPHY: Molly and Ray meet because Molly loses all of her money - her business manager runs away with it. So Molly has to find a job, which she's never had to do before. She decides to take a job that comes her way through her friend Huey (played by Donald Faison). That's when Molly meets Ray, played by Dakota, who is one of the most extraordinary people I've met in my entire life.

Q: And Jesse Spencer plays Neal, a musician - and heartthrob.

MURPHY: Working with Jess Spencer has been tremendous. I know in a few years, I will be able to say I was in Jess Spencer's first American film. He's so nice, and so multi-talented - he's a great musician, great actor, and a really good guy. It was a real joy doing scenes with him.

Q: Back to Molly and Ray - why do they have such a special friendship?

MURPHY: It's a story of a young adult woman who lives her life in a very childlike manner in response to her situation, and of a little girl who lives her life in an adult manner because of her surroundings. Molly teaches Ray how to be a child and Ray teaches Molly how to be an adult. They give each other themselves and their hearts. They change each other's worlds.
