What They Say:

From Emmy nominated executive producer/writer Graham Yost (“Speed,” “Band of Brothers”) and executive producer/director Jon Avnet (“Fried Green Tomatoes,” “Uprising”) comes this stylish ensemble drama that tells the street-level story of the City of Angels with a unique twist -- as seen from the diverse perspectives of the city’s unsung and imperfect heroes. These are the cops, paramedics, beat reporters, members of the D.A.’s office and city officials whose stories overlap and intertwine, creating the experience that is Boomtown.

In a style that can be described as “Rashomon” meets “Pulp Fiction,” the series employs a multiple perspective narrative technique, letting the story unravel as it is experienced from the individual perspectives of the characters -- all of whom have different sensibilities and agendas.

“Sometimes the best way to tell the whole story about something is not to try to tell the whole story, but to tell all the little stories and let the viewers put it together themselves,” says series creator Yost of the storytelling style of “Boomtown.”

“Boomtown” features Donnie Wahlberg (“Band of Brothers”) as Joel Stevens, a dedicated detective; Mykelti Williamson (“Forrest Gump”) as “Fearless” Bobby Smith, Stevens’ easy-going, daredevil partner; Neal McDonough (“Minority Report”) as David McNorris, a politically savvy and ambitious Deputy D.A.; Gary Basaraba (“Brooklyn South”) as Ray Hechler, a veteran patrol officer, and Jason Gedrick (“The Last Don”), as Tom Turcotte, a beat cop struggling to prove himself.

Nina Garbiras (“The $treet”) stars as Andrea Little, a tough metro reporter whose private life is less than perfect and Lana Parrilla (“Spin City”) as Teresa Ortiz, a compassionate paramedic who has already seen too much suffering.

What I Say:

Moving between perspectives can be a difficult thing, though for the most part this show manages to avoid confusion -- and helps the audience keep track of just when and where we are.  Some characters we first meet after the crime, others we meet because of the crime, then suddenly go back to when and where their day began and follow through to the crime itself.

It will be interesting to see if the writers can continue to keep half a dozen balls in the air week after week.
