The simple truth of the matter is that I rarely watch Sitcoms.  I like shows with evolving storylines, with characters that grow, learn, change... and to my surprise I got that and much more in Dharma and Greg!

Where to start?  If you don't know the basic storyline, a hippie and a yuppie (for lack of a better generalization) get married on their first date.  (A great line, "What would have happened if we hadn't gotten married?"  "We'd have gone on a second date?")  Her parents are ultra-hippies who take pride in having taught their daughter to get arrested, and follow their hippie example... and his parents are up-tight country club members with too much money, which will never run out because they never touch the principle.

What makes this show really shine, is not just a remarkably talented cast that plays off of one another beautifully, but two central characters, Dharma and Greg, who are willing to learn from one another, try new things, and grow as people.

While you don't have to have seen a previous episode to enjoy the current one, the storylines frequently build, refer back to things that have happened before, couples go through problems... and those problems are remembered and built on later!

The show is laugh out loud funny, and this from someone who doesn't laugh out loud at most sitcoms, but it is so funny in part because the humor isn't just the painful physical kind, or even the tried and true old jokes... but the characters playing with one another, shocking one another... and simply having a good time.

"Why are you sitting on the TV?"
"She said there's never anything good on TV!"

And Dharma looks so ADORABLE as she shows off that she is ON the TV... and she is good!

Season 1 on DVD is a purchase I heartily recommend... how good is it?  Why give stars when this simple truth may say it all so much better... I only meant to watch an episode or two so I could watch this review... and within 2 days I'd watched EVERY episode on the 3 CDs, and the making of featurette... the cast entertained me so completely that I am looking forward to making time to rewatch the shows with the commentary by cast members turned on!
