BURBANK, Calif. -- November 26, 2002 -- After claiming another sweeps victory in November, NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker today announced plans for new and returning mid-season series that include a January 10 premiere for the drama “Mister Sterling” (Fridays, 8-9 p.m. ET), a February start for the new comedy “A.U.S.A.” and March debuts for the drama “Kingpin” and returning comedy “Watching Ellie."

Specific premiere dates will be announced later.

“Mister Sterling” is a political drama from Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Lawrence O’Donnell (NBC’s “The West Wing”) that chronicles the daily struggles of well-intentioned young Senator William Sterling Jr. (Josh Brolin, “Hollow Man,” “The Mod Squad”) who brings a fresh perspective -- and his own agenda -- to Capitol Hill.

Also starring are three-time Tony Award winner, Audra McDonald (“Carousel,” “Ragtime,” “Master Class”), William Russ (“Boy Meets World”), David Noroña (“Six Feet Under”), James Whitmore (“The Shawshank Redemption”), Graham Greene (“The Green Mile”) and Chandra West (“The Salton Sea”).
O’Donnell is executive producer and creator of this production from NBC Studios and Universal Network Television. Jim Hart, Michael Dinner and Jeff Melvoin serve as co-executive producers.

From three-time Emmy Award-winning executive producer Richard Appel (“The Simpsons,” “King of the Hill”) comes “A.U.S.A.,” a footloose legal comedy about a new class of idealistic but all-too-human Assistant United States Attorneys who struggle to make their way in their personal lives while making a difference in the cases they prosecute every day in New York City. Scott Foley (“Felicity”) stars as a promising young A.U.S.A. who faces an uphill battle in his pursuit of both career and romantic success. Also starring are Amanda Detmer (“The Majestic”), Peter Jacobson (“*61”), John Ross Bowie (“Road Trip”), Ana Ortiz (“Kristin”) and Eddie McClintock (“Stark Raving Mad”).

“A.U.S.A.” is a production of NBC Studios and 20th Century Fox Television. Appel is the executive producer and creator.

Two-time Emmy Award-winning executive producer/writer David Mills (“The Corner,” “ER,” “NYPD Blue” and “Homicide: Life on the Street”) created the gritty new drama “Kingpin,” which depicts the struggles and machinations of a powerful Mexican drug-trafficking family -- displayed in graphic detail as they face challenges from both the United States Drug Enforcement Agency and from the dangerous underworld in which they reside.
Yancey Arias (“The Time Machine”) stars with Sheryl Lee (“L.A. Doctors,” “Twin Peaks”), Ruben Carbajel, Bobby Cannavale (NBC’s “Third Watch”), Angela Alvarado Rosa (“Boss of Bosses”), Brian Benben (“Dream On”) and Shay Roundtree (“Drumline”).

“Kingpin” is produced by NBC Studios and Spelling Television, Inc. Mills, Aaron Spelling (“Beverly Hills, 90210”) and E. Duke Vincent (“7th Heaven”) are executive producers. Dan Sackheim is co-executive producer. Allen Coulter (“The Sopranos”) directs the pilot episode from a script by Mills.

“Watching Ellie” stars Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Seinfeld”) as a Los Angeles club singer who confronts all manner of annoyances, including her much-too-pretty married younger sister (Lauren Bowles, “Ghost World”), superintendent Ingvar (Peter Stormare, “Chocolat,” “Fargo”), and ex-boyfriend Edgar (Steve Carell, “The Daily Show”). Darren Boyd (BBC’s “Smack the Pony”) and Don Lake (”Best in Show”) also star.

“Watching Ellie” is produced by NBC Studios and Radford Productions, LLC. Brad Hall (“Brooklyn Bridge”) is the creator and executive producer.
