American Bandstand: Dick Clark and the Making of a Rock 'n' Roll Empire

BURBANK, Calif. -- November 22, 2002 -— Dick Clark and his co-hosts on THE OTHER HALF were airlifted via helicopter to a Southern California hospital this week to witness the birth of their “surrogate” baby boy. Four months ago the hosts adopted the boy’s mom-to-be when her military husband was shipped overseas to fight the war on terrorism. The episode featuring the birth airs Tuesday, November 26 (syndicated, check local listings for station and time).

“I’ve had three kids but had never witnessed the birth of a baby until now,” said Clark. “This is amazing.”

“Yesterday at 5AM our ‘baby pagers’ went off!” recalls Danny Bonaduce, who was the first to arrive at the hospital. “She refused to have the baby until Dick Clark got to the hospital. I was there nine hours. In typical Dick Clark fashion, Dick walks in, the doctor says push, and there’s the baby.”

Mario Lopez missed the big moment only by minutes stating, “Someone had to hold down the fort.” The hosts were scheduled to tape an episode of THE OTHER HALF that day, and continued to do so up until the very last minute. Throughout the day, Bonaduce reported back to the studio with updates and an expected time of delivery. The episode leading up to birth is scheduled to air Monday, November 25 (syndicated, check local listings for station and time).

After taking on the responsibility of becoming “surrogate” dads-to-be while the ‘real’ father-to-be was overseas, the co-hosts fulfilled, right up to the delivery, pre-fatherly duties including ultrasounds, baby showers, Lamaze classes and more. In the final stages, THE OTHER HALF wore pagers, so all four - Clark, Bonaduce, Lopez and Dorian Gregory -- could be bedside as the child was born.

New mom Maneasseaha beamed, “I wanted to name him Dick-Danny-Mario-Dorian Junior, but in all honesty, I had to call him after his dad. We will call him one of those other names one day out of the week. You all are like family to me.”

THE OTHER HALF is the only syndicated talk show launched during the 2001 TV season to return for 2002. The daytime series presents a look at the world of women through the eyes of men. Each weekday, hosts Dick Clark, Danny Bonaduce, Mario Lopez and Dorian Gregory open the doors into the male psyche to offer four honest perspectives about what men really think.
