Group Bio
Since Walter Ensign formed RAYON in 2001, the Los Angeles-based band has steadily built a growing fan base drawn to its incredibly layered and hypnotic sound. While the instrumentation is unique, it clearly has its roots in the sounds of iconic English rockers ranging from Echo & The Bunnymen to The Dandy Warhols, with a bit of The Who thrown in for good measure. In fact, it was Echo & The Bunnymen guitarist Will Sergeant who suggested the name RAYON. He told Walter backstage following an Echo concert, “Why don’t you call your new band ‘Rayon,’ like your shirt? It’s one word and it sounds British.” Walter liked the sound of it, and the name stuck.
In 2003, RAYON settled on its current principal lineup of Walter Ensign on guitar/vocals and Japanese bassist Mimi Star. Both previously worked together in the band Tramdriver, and bring a diverse yet complementary palette of musical styles and cultural backgrounds.
Walter is an L.A. native whose moody guitar grooves and thoughtful lyrics define RAYON’s sound. He first met Mimi shortly after she left her native Japan in 2000.
Mimi strums her bass with hard, almost reckless vigor to deliver a powerful sound from an amp that’s nearly bigger than her demure frame. “She broke a string after about five minutes, and her fingers were bleeding profusely,” recalls Walter about the first time he heard her play.
Although RAYON is not signed with a record label, the band’s music has created a buzz thanks to dynamic live shows and recent feature interviews in music magazines such as Under the Radar. The band’s reach is poised to grow with the June 1, 2004 release of its debut EP titled “Blow Away,” which is available around Los Angeles at Ameoba Records, other online outlets.
The EP features background vocals from L.A. punk and polyrythm legends such as Keith Morris of the Circle jerks and John Avila from Oingo Boingo. Elephonic’s Ann Montone and hard rocker Michelle Aragon also made significant contributions.
One song from the EP – “I’m Not Walking” -- was featured on the soundtrack for the “The Job” - a film released in early 2004 starring Daryl Hannah. Four other RAYON songs will be on the soundtrack of the soon to be released “The Hollow” starring Nick Carter and Kaley Cuoco.
