Alias is a finely crafted show that requires the audience to pay attention... gradually giving out pieces of the puzzle and leaving the audience guessing what will come next.  The charm, and perhaps most sparkling aspect of the show, is the creators decision to do the unexpected.  When Season 2 ended we expected Jack, agent Bristow's father, and a fellow CIA Agent, to do whatever it took to search for his daughter Sydney, even still, it was a surprise for Season 3 to begin with Jack in prison -- having spent a year in solitary confinement, something made possible by the now popular Patriot Act.

Formerly Double Agent Sydney Bristow is now a straight CIA agent, her loyalties no longer divided between SD6 and the CIA, her loyalties are now torn in a different way, as the love of her life, her former CIA handler --  Agent Vaughn -- married another during her two year absence.  She was believed to be dead -- there were remains, and a DNA match, but that was not enough to convince Jack she was dead, so if her father refused to believe, why would her lover?  Or so she believes in her anger!

Melissa George joins the cast in Season 3 as Vaughn's wife, and only time well tell if he married for love, in a vain attempt to convince the world he was moving forward... or if there even was a reason.

For those who tuned in during Seasons 1 & 2, Francie is dead, twice over.  Sark replaced her with an enemy agent who looked just like her, but wasn't her, and was evil, and she died in the "fire" that also claimed Sydney's life.  As for Will, for some reason he's gone off into a witness protection program, and it is unlikely we will see him again.

Dixon's role was beefed up greatly as he went from being Sydney's SD6 partner, to having his wife assassinated by Sloane, and in turn joining the CIA and becoming the director of the section Jack and Sydney are now a part of.  Jack and Sydney seem perfectly willing to accept his move up, but it is odd, as an audience member, to see a man go from enemy of the state, to head of a CIA division in just three short years.

However, it is important to recall that Marshall and Dixon always BELIEVED they were on the side of all that is right & good.

Marshall, the tech geek, continues to have some of the best lines/scenes.  He's the gadget man who goes off on tangents that leave everyone else in the room spinning, & his excitement, & love of what he does is infectious – for the audience.  And the way others in the room react tells volumes about them.  For him, this is more than just a job, & the performances give the impression the actor could easily say the same.

Sydney’s greatest wild card used to be her father, Jack Bristow – he has a great poker face.  One never knows what he knows, what he believes, or what is really going on with him.  The one thing the audience can be certain of is his desire to protect his daughter.  He can try & claim ulterior motives, & in most cases tries to, but in the end he is always trying to protect her.  And Sydney has come to understand this, and rely on him more now than ever before.

If you haven't seen an ep yet, before you tune in  I suggest you take a moment to go to either the ABC Alias page, or a site like www.alias-tv.com & find out what you’ve missed.  The big picture is starting to take shape, & this will help you catch up.  (I also suggest trying to catch the episode Q&A which is a great recap on the plot to date.  It fills in a lot of the back story where I've tried to highlight relationships here.)

In the end?  I’ll tune in to Alias week in week out to see what great adventures the lady spy goes on.
